Castle's origins began in 1963, as Mr. Larry Marshall, owner of Cash and Carry Plywood and Lumber in Newmarket, Ontario came together with a half dozen dealers in Ontario to form BOLD Lumber: Buying Organization of Lumber Dealers.   The ambition of BOLD was simple: negotiate as a group, the best possible volume pricing with the suppliers of lumber and building materials.   Within one year their membership expanded to twenty.   BOLD continued to grow quickly when in 1969 the business charter had to be adjusted to expand beyond 50.   New members were now joining from across the country, making BOLD a National presence.

A key defining event occurred in 1969 when the Board of Directors researched and rejected the notion of a public share offering and franchising concepts.   This instilled the idea that members of BOLD were free to run their businesses independently.   Even today, each member is an independent owner with their own characteristics that make them successful in their own communities from coast to coast.

BOLD officially became known as Castle Building Centres Group Limited in 1982.   By this time the membership had grown to more than 157 shareholders.   The Castle logo, originally brown, white and gold, was first used in the 70's.   The brand caught on strongly and swept through the membership as a unique brand to which they could associate.   True to the nature of Castle though, the Castle brand was - and remains today - optional for the independent dealer.

The do-it-yourself market stirred in the 80's.   Castle met the trend with the introduction of Castle branded products, promotional flyers and national television spots.   The drive through lumberyard innovation also hit the industry - and Castle dealers were quick to adopt the idea.

In the 90's, Castle continued their growth despite the entry of the "big box" stores into the market.   Maintaining focus on lumber and building materials has set Castle apart from competition.   Castle continued to push forward with innovation in the marketplace.   A magazine produced exclusively for Castle called "Contractor Advantage" was introduced in 1995 as a free publication to renovators and contractors.   Castle also joined the Internet revolution in 1996 and has since produced comprehensive Internet services allowing dealers to communicate and be informed.

Castle has a long history of focus and intelligence in the marketplace from which every member benefits.   In turn, consumers and contractors can get the best value and service from a trusted partner with every visit.
